[edit] <a name="Services_Overview"></a>1. Services Overview
ShellsNet is a network with extensive services that we provide for the convenience of our users. These services are programs ('bots'), like eggdrop, that run on the network and offer services to users. They are much more powerful than eggdrop however, and they can be used anywhere on ShellsNet. They take the form of the special nicknames NickServ, ChanServ, MemoServ, BotServ, and Q, and will reply with a list of commands if you message them the word 'help'.
Here is a list of the services we provide.
- Nickserv - which lets you register and reserve your nickname, so that only you can use it.
- Chanserv - which lets you register channels, and gives you the exclusive right to decide how it is run.
- Memoserv - which lets you send messages to other shellsnet users, even if they are not online.
- Botserv - which allows you to call a bot (Q, X or Z) to your channel, and to configure it.
- Q - a channel monitoring bot that can be set by channel founders to protect against flooding.
For information about how to use a service, use /msg servicename HELP. For example: /msg memoserv help

[edit] <a name="Registering_for_the_first_time"></a>2.1. Registering for the first time
In order to use services, you must register your nickname with nickserv. To do this, type: /msg nickserv register PASSWORD EMAILADDRESS replacing PASSWORD with your password and EMAILADDRESS with your email address. Please note that the email address you give must be valid, as a confirmation code will be sent to it, and you will need this code to complete registration. While you are waiting for the code (sometimes it takes a few minitues), it is a good idea to use /msg nickserv HELP, and then to look up any commands that you want to learn, such as /msg nickserv help SET. In general, anything you see in services notices that appears in CAPITALS is a command, and thus can be used (/msg nickserv COMMAND), or examined (/msg nickserv help COMMAND).
[edit] <a name="Registering_another_nick"></a>2.2. Registering another nick
Nickserv supports a GROUP feature that allows you to have multiple nicks share the same settings, such as password, and access in chanserv. For more help on creating multiple nicks linked together: /msg nickserv help group
[edit] <a name="Why_should_I_register"></a>2.3. Why should I register?
Registration has several powerful advantages to you and to the network, such as:
- No-one else can use your nick, or impersonate you.
- You can get ops or voice in channels given to you by chanserv.
- You can leave your friends messages/notes, even when they are offline, using memoserv.
- You can join certain channels that only registered users may join.
- You can send private messages to certain users that unregistered nicks can't send messages to.

[edit] <a name="How_do_I_register_a_channel"></a>3.1. How do I register a channel?
See the list of requirements below. Once you satisfy all of them, contact an ircop in #shells to request registration. Ircops are generally the people with chanops in #shells. You can find their idle time using /whois NICK NICK Once you have found them and meet the requirements, tell them :
- The channel's name, purpose, and subject.
- In the case or provider channels, also mention your provider name, and SN forum username.
Channel registrations are divided into two types, provider channels and personal channels. The list of requirements for registration of each is given below.
Provider Channels
- The admin's provider must be a SN affiliate, or a trial affiliate. For more information, see SN Admin Information.
Personal Channels
- The channel must have at least 3 regular users apart from the founder.
- The channel must have a defined subject different from all other channels on ShellsNet.
- The channel founder must be a user of SN for at least a week.
- The channel registration must be approved by a services operator.
Any channels where the founder and all his staff don't join for more then 2 weeks at any time without prior notice are dropped.
[edit] <a name="How_do_I_control_a_channel_I_have_registered_or_have_ops_in"></a>3.2. How do I control a channel I have registered, or have ops in?
This is well documented in the Services help files, so consult them, using : /msg chanserv help /msg botserv help
